What is an aluminium louvre roof and how does it work?
An aluminium louvre roof is a permanent patio cover built from powder-coated aluminium frames fitted with a series of horizontal blades (louvres). The blades rotate on their axis — either via a quiet electric motor controlled by remote, wall switch or smartphone app, or via a manual wand — allowing you to adjust the amount of light and ventilation, or close them almost completely against rain. When fully closed, a louvre roof is approximately 95% weatherproof, with integrated gutters collecting and draining rainwater away from the patio. Unlike polycarbonate or shade cloth covers, louvre roofs give you full control over light, heat, airflow and weather protection all year round.
What is the difference between a motorised and manual louvre roof?
A motorised louvre roof uses a quiet electric motor to tilt or close the blades, operated by remote control, wall switch or smartphone app. Motorised systems can be fitted with rain sensors that automatically close the blades when rain is detected and wind sensors that close them before wind speeds become damaging. A manual louvre roof uses a hand-operated wand to adjust the blades. Manual systems are a cost-effective option for smaller patios or simpler requirements. For larger spans, convenience, or where automation is a priority, motorised is the better choice.
What is the difference between a louvre roof and a pergola?
A pergola is the structural frame — the posts, beams and rafters. A louvre roof refers to the blade-based adjustable roofing mechanism. Our louvred pergola combines both: an aluminium frame with a motorised louvre roof built in. We also offer pergola frames with fixed polycarbonate roofing or retractable shearweave fabric roofing. If you already have an existing patio structure in good condition, a standalone louvre roof can sometimes be fitted to it without replacing the frame — we assess this during the free site visit.
What are the three aluminium pergola systems you offer?
We offer three pergola systems. The Louvred Pergola has adjustable baked-enamel aluminium blades (motorised or manual) and is roughly 95% weatherproof when closed. The Aluminium Extruded Pergola is fully powder-coated aluminium with a choice of multiwall polycarbonate or retractable shearweave roofing. The Composite Pergola pairs composite-coated beams with a wood-grain look and low maintenance. Pricing is project-specific and quoted after a free site visit.
What is a ceiling awning or patio ceiling?
A ceiling awning (or patio ceiling) is a fixed overhead panel system fitted beneath a pergola, an existing patio structure, or directly to a wall fascia. Panels are typically multiwall polycarbonate — which diffuses direct sunlight while allowing natural light through — or skylight-grade glazing for a cleaner, brighter finish. Ceiling awnings are weatherproof, block UV, and significantly reduce heat load on south- or west-facing patios. They also work well to enclose the underside of a deck or balcony, turning an open structure into a usable, sheltered space.
What is a fixed awning?
A fixed awning is a permanently installed, non-adjustable cover projecting from a wall or fascia. Our fixed awnings are fabricated from powder-coated aluminium with a choice of IBR (corrugated iron) sheeting or polycarbonate panels. They are ideal for protecting doorways, windows, walkways or smaller patios where a full pergola or louvre roof is not required. All fixed awnings are custom-sized to your opening and carry our full three-part guarantee.
What aluminium carport options do you offer?
We build custom aluminium carports with a choice of IBR sheeting or multiwall polycarbonate roofing. Both are powder-coated aluminium frames sized for your specific vehicles, number of bays and site. Polycarbonate carports allow natural light through, making them popular for garages adjacent to living areas. IBR sheeting provides a more opaque, solid cover and blends well with tiled rooflines. Single, double and multi-bay configurations are all available.
How weatherproof is a louvre roof when fully closed?
When fully closed, our louvre roofs achieve approximately 95% weatherproofing. Each blade overlaps its neighbour and seats against a perimeter seal when closed. Integrated gutters collect any water that penetrates the blade seals and drain it away from the patio. The system handles continuous winter rain well, even at moderate wind speeds. It is not rated for standing water — drainage is always engineered into the design — but performs reliably under normal Cape Town weather conditions.
Do louvre roofs come with rain or wind sensors?
Rain sensors and wind sensors are available as add-ons for all motorised louvre roof systems. A rain sensor detects the first drops and triggers the motor to close the blades automatically, even if you are not at home. A wind sensor closes the blades when speed exceeds a preset threshold. Both sensors are programmed during installation and can be adjusted. They are included in some system packages and priced as extras in others — your written quote will confirm this clearly.
Can I add lighting, fans, drop screens or gutters to my awning?
Yes — all of these can be designed in during fabrication. LED downlights and ceiling fans are wired through concealed channels within the aluminium frame, keeping the installation clean with no exposed conduit. Drop screens and roller blinds are fitted to open sides to provide wind protection, privacy or additional shade. Concealed gutters are standard on louvre roofs and can be added to pergola and ceiling systems. All add-ons are included in the written quote upfront — we design the full specification during your free site visit.

How do I get a quote from Aluminium Awnings?
Contact us via our website contact form, our contact form or email hello@aawn.co.za. We will arrange a free on-site visit at a time that suits you. During the visit we measure the site, discuss your requirements and assess any structural or drainage considerations. We then return with a fixed written quote — typically within 48 hours of the site visit. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed.
How long does the process take from quote to installation?
From an accepted quote, most residential projects are fabricated and installed within 2 to 4 weeks. Fabrication is completed in our Milnerton workshop and installation typically takes 1 to 2 days for a standard residential job. Larger or more complex commercial installations may require additional time. Your project manager will confirm the specific timeline when you accept the quote.
Are your quotes fixed prices with no hidden costs?
Yes. Every quote is a fixed, written price. We do not charge more than the quoted amount unless you make changes to the specification after accepting. We assess all site conditions — including ground surfaces, wall types, drainage requirements and structural load — during the free site visit, so the quote is complete and accurate before you commit to anything.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A deposit is required to confirm your booking and begin fabrication. The deposit amount and payment terms are clearly outlined in your written quote. The balance is due on completion of the installation. We do not begin fabrication until the deposit is received, as all components are custom-made for your specific project.
What are your payment terms? Do you offer payment plans?
Payment is structured as a 60% deposit to confirm and schedule your order, 20% on delivery of materials to site, and the final 20% on completion and sign-off. We don't offer payment plans or financing — but every quote is a fixed written price with no hidden costs.
How long has Aluminium Awnings been installing in Cape Town?
Aluminium Awnings is a registered South African business and has been designing, fabricating and installing aluminium awnings, louvre roofs, pergolas and patio ceilings across Cape Town and the Western Cape since 2017. Every project is built and installed in-house by our own team — no subcontractors — and backed by written guarantees.
Maintenance & durability
What guarantees do your installations carry?
Every installation carries three written guarantees: a Lifetime Corrosion Guarantee on the powder-coated aluminium — the frame, blades and all aluminium components are guaranteed against corrosion for the life of the structure; a 10-Year Structural Guarantee on the frame, posts, beams and load-bearing fixings; and a 2-Year Workmanship Guarantee on the installation itself, covering all fixing points, seals, drainage routing and finish details.
How do I clean my aluminium louvre roof or awning?
Hose the structure down with fresh water every few months — more frequently in coastal areas where salt residue accumulates. For heavier cleaning, use a mild detergent with a soft cloth or brush. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool or harsh solvents, which can damage the powder-coat finish. Clear the blade seals and gutter channels periodically to ensure drainage is not obstructed by leaves or debris. Motorised mechanisms require no regular maintenance beyond keeping the blade channels clear.
Will aluminium rust or corrode near the Cape Town coast?
No. Aluminium does not rust — it forms a natural oxide layer that protects against moisture. Our powder-coat finish adds a further engineered barrier designed specifically for coastal conditions. We have installations on the Atlantic Seaboard, West Coast and False Bay that have performed without corrosion for years. The lifetime corrosion guarantee reflects this confidence — we would not offer it if the product could not perform in those conditions.
How do your louvre roofs perform in Cape Town's south-easter wind?
Our louvre systems are engineered and installed with Cape Town's wind conditions in mind. Motorised systems fitted with wind sensors close the blades automatically when speed reaches a preset threshold. The structural frame is sized for Western Cape wind loads — we assess this on-site and specify posts, beams and footings accordingly. We recommend closing manual louvres when strong winds are forecast and do not advise leaving motorised louvres open and unattended during a south-easter.
Can a damaged louvre blade be replaced?
Yes. Individual blades can be replaced without removing the entire structure. If a blade is damaged by impact or extreme weather, contact us and we will supply and fit a replacement. Colour-matching is straightforward for standard RAL colours. For older installations or custom colours, a re-powder-coat may be required — we will advise on options and cost when you get in touch.
How long does powder-coated aluminium last?
Powder-coated aluminium in a residential setting typically maintains its appearance for 15 to 25 years before the coating needs attention, depending on UV exposure and proximity to the coast. Regular cleaning significantly extends the life of the finish. Our lifetime corrosion guarantee covers the aluminium substrate itself — even after the powder coat has weathered over decades, the metal underneath remains protected against corrosion.
Customisation & add-ons
What standard colours are available?
Our standard range includes white, charcoal, anthracite, bronze, umber grey and matte black. These cover the most popular choices for Cape Town residential and commercial projects and are available as a powder-coat finish in your chosen colour, applied before installation.
Can I get a custom colour or RAL colour match?
Yes. We can match any RAL colour, giving access to thousands of options. Custom colour matching is also available for heritage properties or to match an existing gate, fence or neighbouring structure. Custom colours require a dedicated powder-coat run and are quoted separately. Lead time for custom colours is slightly longer than standard — we will confirm this in your written quote.
What sizes can you build?
Because everything is custom-fabricated to specification, there is no standard size restriction. Span width, projection, height and the number of bays are all determined by your site requirements and the structural engineering of the system. We regularly build single spans over 6 metres and multi-bay structures covering large entertainment decks and commercial terraces. During the site visit we assess structural requirements and size the posts, beams and footings accordingly.
Can I add LED downlights to my louvre roof or pergola?
Yes. LED downlights are one of the most popular add-ons. Wiring is run through concealed channels within the aluminium frame during fabrication, so there are no exposed cables or conduit. The lights are dimmable and connect to your existing home electrical system. Ceiling fans can be fitted the same way. Specify during your initial consultation and we will include the lighting layout in the design and quote.
Can I add drop screens or side enclosures to my pergola?
Yes. Zip-track or channel-guided drop screens and roller blinds can be fitted to open sides to provide wind protection, privacy, rain shelter or additional shade. Side enclosures with glass or polycarbonate panels are available for a more permanent enclosed room effect. All of these options are designed in during the consultation phase and included in the written quote — retrofitting is possible on existing structures but is more involved and more accurately quoted from the start.
Can my motorised louvre roof integrate with a smart home system?
Yes. Our motorised louvre systems are compatible with smart home platforms including Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and can be integrated with home automation systems via standard protocols. The motor controller connects to your home Wi-Fi, enabling voice control, app scheduling and integration with other smart devices such as lighting scenes or outdoor sensors. Specify smart home integration during your consultation and we will confirm compatibility with your existing setup.
