Manual louvre pergola with I-beam frame and white blades — Somerset West, Cape Winelands.

The brief

Somerset West occupies a sheltered position at the foot of the Helderberg mountains, with a climate that is warmer than coastal Cape Town but still subject to the Cape's seasonal wind and rain. This wall-attached manual louvre pergola was installed over a rear entertaining area with a view directly up toward the Helderberg, which made the structural and visual design choices particularly important.

The build

The structure uses a heavy-duty I-beam frame — a deeper section beam that gives the pergola a solid, architectural presence while spanning the full width of the patio without intermediate posts. White louvre blades and a white frame finish the interior, keeping the space light and airy when the blades are open.

Where the patio width exceeds six metres without intermediate support, an I-beam section is specified. The deeper profile provides the rigidity needed to prevent deflection at the centre of the span. In this installation, the I-beam also contributes to the architectural character of the structure — it reads as a considered design choice rather than an engineering necessity.

The result

The finished pergola frames the Helderberg view beautifully while providing a fully sheltered space for year-round outdoor living. The I-beam profile has become a feature of the space rather than just a structural necessity — full patio width covered without any intermediate posts.
