The brief

Integrating downlights into an aluminium ceiling awning extends the usability of the outdoor space into the evening — and when the lights are built into the support beams rather than surface-mounted, the result looks like it belongs rather than something added as an afterthought. This Edgemead installation achieved exactly that: the downlights appear to emerge from the structure rather than being attached to it.

The build

The ceiling awning is a charcoal frame with white ceiling panels, with LED downlights recessed into the support beams rather than surface-mounted through the ceiling panels. This approach preserves the clean ceiling surface while providing ample downward illumination. The electrical circuit is concealed within the beam profile and wired back to a switch position on the house wall.

Surface-mounting downlights through ceiling panels creates visible penetrations in the ceiling surface and requires waterproof fittings. Mounting downlights in the support beams instead conceals them in a structural element that is already designed to carry load — the fitting is protected from direct weather exposure and the ceiling surface remains uninterrupted.

The result

An evening-use outdoor space that is as functional and attractive after sunset as it is during the day. The beam-integrated lighting detail is consistently noticed and admired by guests. The white ceiling surface remains uninterrupted — no visible fittings, no penetrations, no surface marks.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the downlights fitted into the beams rather than the ceiling panels?
Fitting lights into the support beams rather than through the ceiling panels has three advantages: the ceiling surface remains completely clean and uninterrupted, the fittings are recessed into a structural element that provides weather protection, and the electrical circuit is fully concealed within the beam profile with no visible conduit. The result looks designed rather than installed.
What type of downlights are used in outdoor aluminium ceiling awnings?
We use LED fittings specified for outdoor or semi-outdoor use, with appropriate IP (ingress protection) ratings for a covered but not fully enclosed environment. LED fittings are preferred for their low heat output, long life and low energy consumption — an important consideration for fittings that are not easily accessible for bulb replacement.
Can the lighting be added to an existing aluminium ceiling awning?
Retrofitting beam-integrated downlights to an existing awning is complex and may not be possible depending on the beam profile and existing electrical routing. The cleanest result is always achieved when the lighting is planned at the design stage. We can assess existing structures and advise on retrofit feasibility.
Is an electrical connection required for ceiling downlights on a patio awning?
Yes — the circuit is wired from a switch point on the house wall or existing distribution board. The connection must be done by a qualified electrician. We install the conduit, beam channels and fitting positions; the final electrical connection and COC (Certificate of Compliance) is the responsibility of the client's electrician.
Do you install ceiling awnings with integrated lighting across Cape Town's Northern Suburbs?
Yes — we install throughout Edgemead, Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Goodwood and surrounding Northern Suburbs. Integrated lighting is an increasingly popular specification across this area, particularly for properties used frequently for evening entertaining.

  1. All quotations, product information, images, specifications and estimated lead times on this website are provided for general information purposes only and may be subject to change without notice. Final pricing, finishes, measurements, fixing methods, drainage details and structural requirements are confirmed only once an official quotation has been accepted in writing and the required deposit has been paid.
  2. Lifetime Aluminium Corrosion Guarantee. Effective for installations completed on or after 1 June 2026; installations completed before 1 June 2026 carry the previous 15-year aluminium corrosion guarantee. Applies to qualifying marine-grade aluminium components supplied and installed by Aluminium Awnings and covers corrosion failure under normal residential use, provided the product is cleaned and maintained correctly. It does not cover powder-coating fade, surface staining, scratches, coastal salt build-up, chemical damage, neglected maintenance, steel contamination, impact, storm damage, misuse, alterations, or corrosion caused by third-party materials, fixings or contractors.
  3. Composite Guarantee. Composite pergola beams carry a product guarantee of 10 to 25 years depending on the profile — Beam Air solid composite beams 15–25 years, Beam Pro hybrid aluminium-core composite finish 10 years — provided they are installed to specification and maintained as set out in our care guide. It covers manufacturing defects in the composite; it excludes the natural colour variation and gentle mellowing of a timber-look product, misuse, alteration, impact, and damage from failure to clean and maintain.
  4. 10-Year Structural Guarantee. Effective for installations completed on or after 1 June 2026; installations completed before 1 June 2026 have no structural guarantee. Covers the structural integrity of qualifying pergolas, louvre roofs, patio ceilings and carports installed by Aluminium Awnings, provided the structure has not been altered, overloaded, damaged, neglected, incorrectly maintained, or affected by movement in the existing building, walls, foundations or waterproofing. It excludes extreme weather events, abnormal wind loads, flooding, falling objects, accidental damage, unauthorised modifications, or failure of existing structures to which the product is fixed.
  5. 2-Year Workmanship Guarantee. Effective for installations completed on or after 1 June 2026; installations completed before 1 June 2026 carry the previous 1-year workmanship guarantee. Covers installation-related defects caused by Aluminium Awnings workmanship. It does not include normal wear and tear, blocked gutters, lack of cleaning, sealant deterioration from poor maintenance, damage caused by other contractors, electrical faults, motor failures, misuse, storm damage, or issues caused by the client's existing structure, waterproofing, paving, plaster, paintwork, tiles, plumbing or electrical services.
  6. Basic maintenance is required to keep all guarantees valid. Aluminium surfaces, gutters, drainage points and louvre channels should be cleaned regularly with clean water, a soft cloth or sponge and a mild non-abrasive soap. Coastal, high-wind, dusty and tree-lined properties may require more frequent cleaning. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, acidic cleaners, or high-pressure washing directly on seals or motors. Gutters, outlets and drainage points must be kept clear.
  7. Motorised louvre systems, lighting, automation and electrical components must be used correctly and maintained according to supplier guidelines. Electrical connections must be completed by a qualified electrician where required. Supplier warranties on motors, remotes, electronics, lighting, powder coating, sheeting or third-party components remain subject to the relevant manufacturer's warranty terms.
  8. Lead times are estimates only and may be affected by supplier stock, powder coating, weather, access, engineering, client approvals, third-party contractors or delays outside our control. Total lead time from accepted quotation to project sign-off is typically 3–5 weeks. Deposits may be non-refundable once materials have been ordered, manufactured, cut, powder coated or allocated to a project.
